Top Collector Vehicles from the 1990s Through the 2010s

The Opportunity
A 1999 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
A 2005 Ford Thunderbird.
A 2012 Porsche Cayman.
Most brokers picture a 1965 Mustang when they hear “collector car.” But vehicles from the 1990s through the 2010s are an increasingly popular part of the enthusiast market, and some of them are likely sitting in your book on a standard auto policy, where they may be underinsured and unrecognized.
Use this guide to review your book before year-end and start the conversation.
Why These Vehicles Need Specialty Coverage
- Value can hold or grow: Many of these vehicles are worth more today than they were when new. A policy that pays depreciated value may leave your client underinsured.
- They’re used differently: Occasional, seasonal, weekend use. Hagerty coverage is designed around how enthusiasts actually use their vehicles.
- They’re personal: These are vehicles clients saved for and maintain with care. They want a policy that treats them that way.
- Guaranteed Value™ coverage: A covered total loss is settled at the agreed value, not a depreciated one.* That’s a conversation worth having.
How to Spot Them in Your Book
You don’t need to be a car expert. Look for:
- Clients with multiple vehicles: a daily driver plus something else
- 1990s-2010s model years with low mileage or seasonal use
- A storage address or garage separate from the primary residence
- Makes and models from the list below
Then ask one simple question: “Do you have any vehicles you only drive on weekends or for special occasions?”
Enthusiast Vehicles to Look For in Your Book
- Bentley: Continental, Turbo R, Azure
- BMW: M3, M5, Z3
- Chevrolet: Camaro, C1500, Corvette
- Dodge: Challenger, Viper, Stealth R/T Turbo
- Ferrari: California, 348, F355
- Ford: F-150, Mustang, Thunderbird
- Honda: S2000, Prelude, Civic Si
- Jeep: Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee
- Mazda: MX-5 Miata, RX-7, MX-3
- Pontiac: Firebird, Grand Prix GTP, Bonneville SSEi
- Porsche: 911, Boxster, Cayman
Note: The Mustang, Corvette, and 911 are perennial Hagerty vehicles worth watching for.
What to Do When You Find One
Start the conversation. Don’t pitch.
- “I noticed you have a [Year/Make/Model] on your policy. Do you drive it regularly, or is it more of a weekend car?”
- “Did you know Hagerty has a program built for vehicles like that? It works very differently from a standard auto policy.”
From there, the conversation tends to lead itself. If a client owns more than one enthusiast vehicle, that’s a natural opening to broaden the relationship.
